Abstract
Summary Differences in leaf size and the amount of axillary branching were observed on individual stools of the apple rootstock Crab C. Cuttings from these individuals were taken, and, during four ‘generations’ on different sites, retained their characteristics. A suggestion that an influence or an agent from the root system might cause such differences was tested by cross-budding three of these clones: leaf size in the large-leaved clone 6 was reduced when it was budded onto rootstocks of one of the small-leaved clones (13), but budding clone 13 onto clone 6 did not affect leaf size in the latter.
