Abstract
Drawing on the concept of commitment, this paper focuses on several varieties of primary sport roles and their concomitant identities. Specifically, commitment to a sport role is attributed to the social support factors, intrinsic and extrinsic rewards, and satisfactions. A typology of sport roles is presented utilizing a three-dimensional model of commitment to help explain one's identity within each of the sport roles. Additionally, the commitment model might be generalized to develop a greater understanding of other sport roles.
