Abstract
To the Editor: Fowler and his colleagues1 are to be congratulated on their studies of lymphocyte transformation in vitro induced by cerebrospinal fluid in multiple sclerosis, published in the Journal of November 10, 1966. However, features of the methodology reported cast doubt on the specific nature of the results. As Dr. Fowler and his colleagues state, the transformation of lymphocytes induced in vitro by phytohemagglutinin (PHA) and by specific antigens is characterized not only by cellular enlargement but also by new DNA synthesis and eventual mitosis.
