Abstract
A Leucochloridium sporocyst with 3 mature brood sacs 1.5 cm. X 4 mm. was found in the tentacles and anterior end of a Succinea ovalis from Rockland Co., N. Y. The brood sacs were banded with brown, tan and white, arranged in 2 zones of brown and white alternated with 2 zones of tan and white. The brood sacs were pulsatile; the rate of pulsation was directly correlated with the light intensity. Metacercariae were visible within them. Two brood sacs were fed to a nestling English sparrow. 12 days later 24 adult Leucochloridium were recovered from its cloaca. The eggs were abnormal in appearance, and attempts to infect S. ovalis were unsuccessful. Some worms were transferred to 3 successive sparrow hosts, but only one egg was found in host feces, and the worms finally died. The worm is named L. fuscostriatum after the brown-banded sporocyst. Keywords
