Abstract
There is little current or systematic information concerning the nature of relationships between former spouses who continue to share child rearing. In this study, based on a General Systems Theory paradigm, 129 former spouses in mothercustody postdivorce families participated in an in-depth, semistructured interview. Descriptive findings on multiple dimensions of former spousal relationships, from the perspectives of both male and female members of the divorced couple, are presented. The former spousal relationship emerges as a vital component of the reorganized, postdivorce family system.
