Abstract
Xestolide (5) and secoxestenone (6), two metabolites with new terpenoid carbon skeletons, have been isolated from the northeastern Pacific sponge Xestospongiavanilla. Proposed structures for 5 and 6 are based on spectroscopic analysis and chemical interconversions. The similarity in structure between xestolide (5), secoxestenone (6), xestenone (2), and the aglycone of secoxestovanin A (4) has prompted the biogenetic proposal that metabolites 2, 5, and 6 are degraded triterpenoids.
