Abstract
An experiment on industrial crossing was done from 1957 to 1961, with 2 flocks of ewes, to compare different improved breeds of rams, Ber-richon, Ile-de-France, Southdown and Charmois, for production of lambs for slaughter. The flocks of ewes were local breeds, on of Prealpesdu-Sud at Alguebelle (Drome) and the other of Bizet at Marmilhat (Puy-de-Dome). From the results collected during 5 successive lambings at each center it was possible to compare the paternal breeds for weight gain of the lambs, their morphological development and the quality of their carcases. This paper deals with weight gain of more than a 1000 lambs. The study is based on 4 criteria, birthwelght, weights at 30 and 70 days and age at a standard slaughter weight, 30 kg at Aiguebelle and 27 kg at Marmilhat. It was possible to study the influence of sex, type of birth and breed of ram.
