Abstract
A general theory of the effective mass of a dislocation of general shape, moving with constant velocity over its entire length, is presented. Special cases of the general result yield the previously determined values for a straight edge or screw dislocation of infinite length. A new result, the effective mass of a kink, is also derived. Keywords
