Alignment, pointing accuracy and field rotation of the UK 1.2-m Schmidt telescope

Abstract
An analysis of the alignment and pointing accuracy of the UK 1.2-m Schmidt telescope has resulted in a remarkably accurate determination of the parameters involved. The resulting improvement in the pointing has greatly increased the efficiency of guide star acquisition. The telescope polar axis elevation angle is adjusted for every photograph in order to minimize field rotation due to atmospheric refraction. A method of determining the optimum setting is described.
