Studies on the Toxicity and Activity of Streptothricin

Abstract
Crude streptothricin was markedly effective in vitro against many gram-positive and gram-negative organisms. This coupled with the fact that body fluids do not inhibit its action suggest that the drug may be of great value in infected wounds and burns. Mice infected with many gram-neg. organisms were fully protected by small amts. of the streptothricin. It was particularly effective parenterally. Given orally it greatly reduced the intestinal lactose fermenting bacteria. This resembles certain sulfonamides and indicates its possibilities in bacillary dysentery and typhoid fever.
