Abstract
From the governing of cities to urban governance. Patrick Le Galès. The concept of urban governance is introduced and discussed in order to show the extent to which centre-periphery relations and institutional analysis no longer explain city government changes in Britain and France. Two middle range concepts, urban growth coalitions and urban regimes, are analysed and criticised for being too American. Instead of focusing on a problem-solving approach to urban governance, a more sociological approach is suggested.
