Abstract
The rapid changes in health care have moved many persons to anticipate the role and nature of the blood supply system in the future. Demographic evolution, socioeconomic factors, and technological developments are expected, in a synergistic manner, to greatly affect the traditional supply system as we know it today. This will particularly affect blood banks with a limited opportunity to expand into alternate service areas. A number of blood banks will disappear. Those that survive will play a more crucial role than ever in the health care system. Keywords
