Abstract
Dealing with those related to or closely involved with a patient can be a worrying occasion for newly qualified staff. Unlike clinical skills, developed throughout training and of which they are fairly confident, interacting with the patient’sfamily/friends in demanding or tense circumstances maybe for new staff both novel and unnerving. Usually then, the ward sister or charge nurse takes control, leaving inexperienced nurses in a bit of a quandary. Because they've little experience in ‘dealing with relatives in difficultsituations’, when such a situation does arise the nurse in charge may lack the confidence to permit them to deal with it. A potential learning situation is lost, and those nurses remain just as inexperienced as before.
