Abstract
More and more pharmaceutical products are being developed into controlled release delivery systems such as skin patches, or polymeric carriers such as microspheres and liposomes. The goals of these alternative dosing forms are usually to provide a convenient method for administering the active ingredient at a uniform and controlled rate. Without such delivery systems, drugs which have a short half-life usually require frequent dosing to be effective. The new delivery systems also provide alternatives to parenteral administration of drugs that are too easily degraded to be taken orally. Putting drugs into microspheres or liposomal preparations may be used to provide selective distribution of a drug to targeted organs as well. Keywords
