Abstract
Synopsis: In the first in a series of studies of sediment transport into the Tay Estuary, the directly measured and indirectly estimated sediment loads passing two gauging stations are compared. Discharges of 154 000 tonnes per year pass the lowests station, and 98% of this is in suspension. None of the used indirect methods of calculating the load yields the measured discharge figures for either gauging station. Erosion rates of 187–238 t.km −2 p.a. are established for the 782 km 2 drainage system. Keywords
