Abstract
Through quantitative coding of potential news items during newsroom observation, this study explored the roles of four forces on news selection. News judgment, although important to selection decisions, was not the only relevant factor. Constraints on resources for covering stories were nearly as important in shaping news content, but the impact of subsidized news information and electronic technology were relatively less significant. Keywords
