In the course of two years a series of four field surveys of CNSLD were carried out at the small island of Schiermonnikoog in the Netherlands, as a pilot-study with the object to obtain experience with longitudinal studies. During these surveys we have tried to get an impression about observer variability and seasonal variation in the prevalence of respiratory symptoms. Between four well-trained interviewers there were no significant inter-observer and intra-observer differences in prevalence of most respiratory symptoms. Only the question on dyspnoea grade 2 of the standardized MRC-ECCS questionnaire produced some inconsistencies. No seasonal variation in respiratory symptoms was found.
