Carbonic Anhydrase in Congenital Heart Disease.

Abstract
The carbonic anhydrase in the blood of children with cyanotic congenital heart disease was investigated as a possible mechanism for permitting the adaptation of cyanotic individuals to low degrees of oxygen saturation. The carbonic anhydrase level is moderately to markedly elevated in cyanotic 26832-26852 ANIMAL PHYSIOLOGY - CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM [Vol. 24] 2512 congenital heart disease as contrasted with the normal and also with the acyanotic congenital heart disease. The carbonic anhydrase level was corrected for the increased polycythemia or hematocrit, and the value fell in the normal range. The infant carbonic anhydrase value approached the adult between the ages of 5 and 7 months.
