Hematocrit Method for Determining Total Hemocyte Counts of Larvae of the Tobacco Budworm, Heliothis virescens (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)1

Abstract
A new method for obtaining hematocrits in insects is described. Hematocrits and hemocyte counts were done on the same drop of hemolymph from larvae of Heliothis virescens (Fabr.). A bivariate regression analysis shows a high correlation between hematocrits and total hemocyte counts. Hemocyte counts predicted from the hematocrits, using the regression equation, are comparable to hemocyte counts made using the hemocytometer method. The new method is accurate, reproducible, and provides a rapid, efficient means for determining total hemocyte counts in insects.
