Abstract
Quantitative absorption spectra of 5 carotenoids were detd. by a photoelectric spectrophotometric method. Absorption curves from 3800 to 5200 A are presented for the following: a-carotene, B-carotene, and cryptoxanthol in hexane soln. and luteol and zeaxanthol in ethanol soln. Methods employed for purification of these pigments are included. A study was made of the effect of spectral region isolated (a function of monochromator slit width) on the numerical value of absorption coeffs. for various parts of the carotenoid type of spectrum. These absorption spectra are expected to provide fundamental constants for quan-titative spectroscopic analysis of pigment mixtures. Keywords
