Investigation of a Health Care Worker with Symptomatic Human Immunodeficiency Virus Infection: An Epidemiologic Approach

Abstract
An epidemiologic investigation was conducted of a general surgeon with a diagnosis of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), and the subsequent risk of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission to surgical patients was evaluated. This investigation found that risk of HIV transmission from the index case to surgical patients was essentially nonexistent. The use of surgical aseptic technique practiced by the index case apparently precluded virus exposure in all instances. However, the investigation determined that as a medical patient, the index case may have been a source of exposure to some of the dental staff. Dental clinic personnel were at risk of HIV exposure due to the lack of barrier techniques.
