Abstract
A comparison of phytoplankton standing crops, in terms of the number of chlorophyll fluorescing cells throughout the water column per m2 of surface, is extended on a yearly basis for areas of the Southern Ocean and the Strait of Florida. It is suggested that, despite apparent high production during the austral summer, the overall production of Antarctic and temperate and subtropical areas may be at least of the same order of magnitude.
