WHO/UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative — educating for success

Abstract
In 1991, the WHO/UNICEF Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative was launched. Globally, over 12 000 hospitals are now designated as ‘Baby Friendly.’ The Baby Friendly Initiative was launched in the UK in 1994, and to date, five hospitals have received the award. As NHS Trusts work towards gaining ‘Baby Friendly’ status, education of staff has become particularly important. This article, the first of a two part series, describes the adapted European WHO/UNICEF breastfeeding education programme currently being taught in the UK. The course is entitled ‘Breastfeeding management: a modular course’ (WHO/UNICEF, 1997).
