The Steelworkers Survey Their Health Services—A Preliminary Report

Abstract
The Union now has non-contribuotry hospital and surgical insurance benefits under collective bargaining agreements for nearly all members and dependents, and broader benefits for some, costing in the aggregate about $125-150 million annually. The programs compare favorably with those of other labor unions but they are widely criticized for inadequate scope of the health services, limited insurance protection of families, wasteful practices, and rising costs. Needed improvements are especially indicated by analysis of area variations and by comparisons with experience under comprehensive group practice plans. A Union proposal for establishment of a joint management-labor study committee has been accepted, and joint study of immediate and long range improvements has begun.
