The Nature of the "Inorganic Phosphate" in Voluntary Muscle

Abstract
The greater part of the "inorganic phosphate" of voluntary muscle (cat) is, during rest, not inorganic phosphate but a very unstable compound of phosphoric acid and crea-tine ("phospho-creatine"). During contraction, or in resting muscle after its removal from the body, this substance is hydrolyzed, while during the recovery process it is resynthesized from its constituents. From analyses of preparations of the substance which are not entirely pure, the indications are that no third constituent is present.
