Abstract
Duodenal aspirates obtained from 25 Haitian subjects have been tested for the presence of folate conjugase activity by determining their capacity to release monoglutamate folate activity from egg yolk, a natural source of polyglutamate activity. Evidence of conjugase activity was detected in aspirates from 5 of 10 patients with tropical sprue and from 7 of 15 other subjects. Whether this enzyme is present in sufficient quantity in the succus entericus to deconjugate a physiologically significant quantity of dietary polyglutamate folate activity is uncertain. This publication has 24 references indexed in Scilit:
