Psychiatric Manifestations of AIDS Spectrum Disorders

Abstract
This paper reviews the proposed etiology and epidemiology of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). It summarizes the psychiatric symptoms associated with members of high-risk groups, patients who have AIDS-related complex (ARC) or AIDS, and patients who are seropositive yet asymptomatic. It differentiates between psychiatric manifestations predating and following prodromal symptoms of immunodeficiency and elucidates diagnostic criteria that may assist in this differentiation process. The importance of diagnostic distinction between premorbid, reactive, functional, and neuropsychiatric manifestations is emphasized. A brief description of suggested treatment and management regimens for the various forms of AIDS-related psychopathology then follows.
