The Thymus; Current Concepts

Abstract
Recent experimental studies have related the thymus and other “central lymphoid tissue” to the ontogenetic development of immunologic capacity, to lymphomagenesis, and to maintenance of adaptive immunity in mammals. Clinically the thymus has been clearly implicated in myasthenia gravis, and a link between the thymus and other auto-immune diseases has been suggested. A high incidence of lymphocytic and reticular malignancy has been observed in certain diseases marked by immunologic deficiency, namely, ataxia-telangiectasia, congenital sex-linked recessive agammaglobulinemia, and also primary acquired agammaglobulinemia.
