Abstract
It is no longer a surprise that program maintenance dominates the total cost of a large software system over its lifetime. In response to these costs, the emphasis in program design has largely shifted from the time and space issues of machine efficiency to issues of clear and flexible program structures that can be easily maintained. Keywords
