Abstract
Probability and decision theory are used to solve the decision problems in subsoil exploration, design of a foundation on clay, and design of a foundation on sand. The uncertainties that arise out of inaccuracies in measurement of soil strength and variability of natural soil deposits are considered and a model of the design and decision process is developed to account for the available information, the experience and judgment of the engineer, and the costs of investigation and failure.
