CLOSED RENAL TRAUMA IN CHILDREN

Abstract
Closed renal trauma in children often results in serious injury. In a series of 100 consecutive patients with closed renal trauma treated at the Royal Children''s Hospital [Australia] from 1967-1978, 32 children required surgery. Of these, 8 children came to nephrectomy, whereas in 19 children viable renal tissue was conserved by the use of techniques such as renal suture or partial nephrectomy. The remaining 5 children had surgery, not for trauma, but rather for preexisting hydronephrosis discovered during investigation. There was a close relationship between the classification of renal injuries and the need for surgery. In this series there were 2 deaths and 2 late complications.
