Abstract
In this short communication the Trouton-Noble experiment is considered first in the classical ether theory. Going over to the special theory of relativity, one encounters some difficulties in describing the null result. A simple explanation of this result is given in terms of the principle of virtual work, introduced recently in this context by J. H. Fremlin. Keywords
