Abstract
Haberman discusses the current critical need for more minority teachers and describes the social, educational, and political conditions that militate against increasing minority enrollments. Four "detours" or false hopes for enhancing minority student involvement in teach ing are highlighted and four realistic ap proaches to recruiting and preparing minority teachers are outlined.Keywords
