Abstract
Two hundred and seventy-two women living in Gothenburg were examined clinically and/or replied to a questionnaire to determine the prevalence of objective and subjective symptoms of mandibular dysfunction. There was a correlation between the subjective symptoms and the number of tipped teeth; between the severity of dysfunction and the need for orthodontic treatment, and between tenderness of muscles on palpation and the need for orthodontic treatment or for prosthetic treatment for occlusal rehabilitation. It is evident that the etiology of mandibular dysfunction is multifactorial.
