REPRODUCTION OF DUDRESNAYA CRASSA HOWE

Abstract
Herbarium material of this Bermudian sp. at the New York Bot. Gard. was studied to ascertain the characters of authentic material. Bermudian collections were studied to complete our knowledge of variation in structure. Sexual reproduction and carpospore formation was studied in detail. There was generally no demonstrable connection between the ooblast which communicated with the upper nutritive cell, and the second which could equally produce an ooblast. This is contrary to the accepted account of reproduction in the genus. Tetraspore production is unknown in the sp., the incomplete mechanism for transfer of a zygote nucleus to the carpospore-forming apparatus may be correlated with this.
