Abstract
A crystalline antibiotic, pleuromutinin, was obtained through the use of chloroform, alcohol, and ether from P. mutilus and P. passeckerianus, grown in still and shake cultures of beechwood shavings and corn-steep medium. Principal activity is against the Gram + bacteria; action on phages and fungi is explained in detail in the paper. No reduction in its activity resulted from incubation for 4 hrs. with 5% human blood in beef-extract broth. The LD 50 of a single dose for 14-16 g. Carworth Farms CF1 male mice was greater than 60 mg./Kg. There was some urticaria in susceptible individuals from repeated contact with the soln. or solid substance. This publication has 3 references indexed in Scilit:
