The Pitting Corrosion Resistance of Microcrystalline Coatings of Sputtered 321 Stainless Steel

Abstract
The pitting corrosion resistance of microcrystalline coatings of 321 (UNS S32100) stainless steel prepared by magnetron sputtering was investigated by measuring the pitting corrosion potential and electrochemical noise in the passive region in a chloride-containing solution. It was found that if the microcrystalline coating was single phase with either a bcc or fcc structure, it possessed higher pitting corrosion resistance than the bulk metal with a normal grain size.
