COMPARING THE MARGINAL TOTALS OF SQUARE CONTINGENCY TABLES

Abstract
Suppose that each of a sample of subjects is assigned to one of m categories by one standard, and to one of the same m categories by a second standard. A comparison of the two resulting marginal distributions may be made by means of Stuart's and Maxwell's generalization of McNemar's test. Explicit expressions are given for the generalized statistic when m = 3 and m = 4. Methods are suggested for identifying those categories for which significant differences exist. A numerical example is given.
