Abstract
Transformations leading to the appearance of the perivitelline space and vitelline envelope, the structure of the vitelline envelope, and the structure and origin of the chorion in Pergamasus barbarus were the subjects of ultrastructural studies. The follicular cells participate in the perivitelline space formation. The material of the vitelline envelope is secreted by exocytosis from the oocyte at the beginning of vitellogenesis. Later, the vitelline envelope is transformed into endochorion protecting the embryo from mechanical damage. Exochorion is secreted onto the endochorion during egg deposition. Double role of exochorion as plastron and as a structure protecting the embryo from dessication is suggested.
