Abstract
The role of music therapy in the treatment of young adults with both mental illness and alcohol/drug problems is discussed based upon the authors' experience with a National Institute of Mental Health demonstration project. Music therapy interventions are divided into categories (music discussion, music instruction, group participatory music, music listening, and expressive music interventions) and related to five stages of dual diagnosis treatment (engagement, crisis intervention, stabilization, active treatment, and recovery). Music therapy interventions recommended for each stage are discussed and illustrated with care examples. Music therapy has been an important medium for helping these clients stabilize and improve their quality of life as they recover from mental illness and alcohol/drug problems. Keywords
