The Roughening Transition and the Surface Stiffness of Helium-3 Crystals

Abstract
New careful observation of helium 3 crystals, slowly growing in a transparent and deformable cell, show the existence of (110) facets on their surface up to T = 0.10 K. We independently measured the surface stiffness of these crystals. A preliminary result is 0.047 erg cm-2, a much larger value than expected from the temperature at which facets disappear.
