Abstract
A constitutive model for isotropic bimodular materials is presented. Due to the complexity of constitutive equations for such materials, the finite element method is used to solve for the deformation, stress, and fracture responses associated with bimodular materials. A general purpose finite element code is developed to solve plane elasticity and fracture mechanics problems associated with isotropic and biomodular materials. The finite element code is used to evaluate the deformation, stress, stress intensity factors, and the J‐integral for two different representations of bimodular concrete beams. The effect of elastic moduli and Poisson's ratio parameters on the aforementioned variables is studied. It is concluded that the effect of the bimodular Poisson's ratio parameter is negligible. The effect of the bimodular elastic moduli parameter on the mode I stress intensity factor and the average J‐integral values is small and can be neglected. However, it has a significant effect on the axial and transverse displacements, stresses, and mode II stress intensity factor. Keywords
