Abstract
Films of magnetic garnets, suitable for bubble domain devices, can be grown epitaxially on non‐magnetic garnets. The performance of devices made from these films depends upon the defects present in the films. Defects which adversely affect performance are cracks and dislocation lines. Cracks can be avoided if a condition — suggested by the Griffith model — is fulfilled. The dislocation content of films is usually determined by the dislocations present in the substrate. Most substrate dislocations are prismatic loops which encircle inclusions and lie on (111), (110) and (100) planes. A large fraction of the remainder are giant helical dislocations with axes parallel to 〈111〉 and 〈100〉 directions. Prismatic loops and helices are not formed if the garnet composition is carefully controlled. Keywords
