Psychosocial Problems Among Adults with Epilepsy

Abstract
Summary: The psychosocial functioning of adults with epilepsy was evaluated by the administration of the Washington Psychosocial Seizure Inventory, which was given to five groups of patients across the United States. In four of the five samples, the results were indistinguishable from one another, with similar psychosocial problems suggested despite substantially different patient characteristics and referral sources. Emotional, interpersonal, vocational, and financial concerns were most commonly found, as well as difficulties in dealing with seizures. Persons in the fifth sample were selected somewhat differently; they had fewer vocational and financial problems, but were otherwise similar. The results have implications for the study of psychosocial problems in epilepsy and for the establishment of treatment programs.RÉSUMÉ: Le fonctionnement psychosocial ď adultes avec épilepsie a étéévalué par le “Washington Psychosocial Seizure Inventory” chez cinq groupes de patients à travers les Etats Unis. Dans quatre des échantillons, les résultats étaient indistinguables ď une époque àĽ autre. Les problèmes psychosociaux étaient similaires malgré les caractéristiques substantiellement différentes des patients et de leur mode de recrutement. Des problèmes émotionnels, interpersonnels, professionels, et financiers étaient le plus souvent retrouvés ainsi que des difficultés à faire face aux crises. Les patients du 5ème échantillon qui ont été sélectionnés différemment, avaient moins de problèmes professionnels et financiers mais étaient par ailleurs similaires. Ces résultats ont des implications pour Ľétude des problèmes psychosociaux dans Ľépilepsie et pour Ľétablissement des programmes de traitement.RESUMEN: El funcionamiento psicológico de adultos epilépticos ha sido evaluado administrando el lnventorio Psicosocial para Ataques de Washington (WPSI) a 5 grupos de enfermos en todos los Es‐tados Unidos. En 4 de las 5 muestras los resultados fueron in‐distinguibles con problemas psicosociales semejantes a pesar de que las caracten'sticas de los pacientes y las fuentes de referi‐miento fueron sustancialmente distintas. Las preocupaciones emocionales, interpersonales, vocacionales y financieras fueron las mas comunes y también las dificultades en controlar los ataques. Las personas de la quinta muestra se seleccionaron de modo algo diferente y teni'an menos problemas vocacionales y financieros siendo semejantes en otros aspectos. Estos resultados tienen implicaciones en el estudio de problemas psicolo‐gicos en la epilepsyía y en lo referente al establecimiento de pro‐gramas terapeúticos.ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Die psychosoziale Situation von Erwachsenen mit Epilepsie wurde mit Hilfe des Washington psychosozialen Anfallsrnventars (WPSI) an 5 Gruppen von Patienten aus verschiedenen Teilen der Vereinigten Staaten untersucht. Zwischen 4 der 5 Gruppen gab es keine erkennbaren Unterschiede in den Ergebnissen: Sie boten ähnliche psychozosiale Probleme trotz völlig unterschied‐Hcher den einzelnen Patienten und sein Herkommen charakter‐isierender Faktoren. Emotionale, interpersonale, berufliche und finanzielle Bedenken wurden ebenso häufig gefunden wie Schwierigkeiten, mit den Anfällen fertig zu werden. Die Patienten der 5. Gruppe wurden etwas unterschiedlich selektiert. Sie hatten geringere berufliche und finanzielle Probleme. waren aber in anderer Hinsicht ähnlich. Die Ergebnisse haben Bedeu‐tung für das Studium psychosozialer Probleme bei der Epilepsie und für das Aufstellen von Behandlungsprogrammen.
