Abstract
The radiant energy of the sun is an important factor in the formation of vitamin D in hay but apparently it is not the only agent. Vitamin D assays of plants cured in the dark or when artificially dried showed the presence of appreciable amts. of this vitamin. Barn-cured hay, wherein the exposure of the cut plant to the sun is limited, contained practically the same amts. of vitamin D as did the sun-cured hay from the same lot. Further assays made on brown leaves and green leaves picked from growing plants showed slightly more vitamin D in the former than in the latter. The results of these assays indicate that vitamin D may be present in the growing plant to a larger extent than heretofore has been considered to be the case.
