Causes of abortion in dairy cattle

Abstract
From July 1976 to June 1977 paired serum samples and/or fetal and placental tissue samples were received from practitioners in Wisconsin. Among 1288 paired serum samples, 13.9% allowed a diagnosis of IBR/IPV virus and 7.5% bovine diarrhoea virus, while 78.6% did not permit a diagnosis. Of 475 tissue samples, with or without paired serum samples, 13.5% gave a diagnosis of IBR/IPV virus, 5.7% bovine diarrhoea virus, 3.8% Corynebacterium pyogenes, and 2.9% leptospirosis. No diagnosis was made in 64.4%.
