An historicodevelopmental analysis of the circumplex model of trait descriptive terms.

Abstract
The interpersonal circle is a two-dimensional model of trait-descriptive terms. Two fundamental dimensions, Affiliation and Control, underlie the circle. It was argued that the language of the interpersonal circle has undergone an historical process of development such that words labelling parts of the circle which are closest to the basic axes of Affiliation and Control were articulated before words labelling parts of the circle which are more distant from the basic axes. The Dates of Entry of 225 words taken from Kiesler''s (1982) list support this hypothesis.
