Abstract
The structural pattern of the Franco-Italian Maritime Alps is outlined. Autochthonous units include the Argentera-Mercantour massif and a folded sedimentary zone which locally represents the dislocated cover of the massif. The Col de Tende unit is considered parautochthonous. Between the Tende col and the sea is a series of rootless overthrust units which rest either directly, or with an intermediate unit of Nummulitic (Tertiary) schists on the outer margin of the so-called imbricate Ligurian Pennine complex. The paleogeographic development of the region is sketched.
