Abstract
As a part of the Albano-Thessalian furrow, the Korçë basin is an active graben initiated during the Pliocene; its present limits are directly controlled by Quaternary tectonics. There is no system of fluvial terraces and the eastern fault scarps are showing evidence of activity during the Pleistocene (relationships between fault lines and colluvial deposits). Neotectonics combined with the development of the great alluvial fan built up by the Devollit river, accounts for the location of the Maliq lake, a key element in human settlement as early as the Bronze Age. Palynological and archaeological data from the Sovjan site emphasize subtle changes of lacustrine, marshy and alluvial areas which express a complex balance between tectonic, environmental and societal parameters.
