CANCER DIAGNOSIS BY BONE MARROW SMEARS

Abstract
Bone marrow aspirates were examined from 4100 patients by the imprint method. Deviations from the normal cell-patterns which occur in the presence of malignancy are described. Experimental evidence is presented to explain the deviations from normal patterns, induction of malignant growth and the role of tissue immunity. The prognostic value of this examination is reviewed in 70 cases of the breast over a 3 year period. This method was particularly valuable in cases which present diagnostic problems and has been recommended to the medical profession as a valuable complement to histological, body fluid, and lymph node studies.
